Ungrateful Wives and High School Crushes

You know, Anonymous, I’ve always been the kind of person who tries to see the best in everyone. But some people just make it so hard! Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot from my old high school crush - yes, that’s you I’m talking about - and let me tell you, your girlfriend sounds like a real piece of work. Every time we run into each other at the store where I work, you’re on the phone with her, and she’s just ripping into you. *nervous laugh* I mean, I get that relationships have their ups and downs, but constant criticism? That’s not love, if you ask me.

I’ll admit it; at first, when I heard you were in a relationship, I felt a pang of jealousy. There, I said it! *giggles* But as time went on and I got to hear more of how she treats you… well, let’s just say my feelings shifted from envy to pity. For her, not for you! You deserve someone who appreciates you, who makes you feel like the amazing person you are. Not someone who constantly puts you down and makes you feel small. It’s like she’s trying to turn my sweet high school crush into some kind of doormat!

Sometimes when we’re talking at the store - or rather, when she’s yelling at you over the phone and you’re politely taking it - I catch myself wondering what could have been if things had worked out differently back in high school. Would we be happy together? Would we be one of those couples who still hold hands after all these years? *sighs wistfully* Of course, that ship has sailed… or has it?
