After the mill closed its doors, I found solace in a whole new world – ham radio. It scratched that itch for connection, brought back those old feelings of teamwork and shared purpose. There’s a certain magic hearing voices travel halfway ‘round the globe, chattin’ away with folks who understand the thrill of cracklin’ static and Morse code.
These days, I spend hours hunched over my rig, tunin’ in signals, swappin’ war stories with fellow enthusiasts. One fella in Australia, he calls himself Aussie Outback, told me tales of bushfires and kangaroos hoppin’ past his antenna. Can’t beat that kind of camaraderie.
Of course, some young whippersnappers don’t get it, think cell phones replaced the need for such antiquated tech. Well, let them try navigatin’ the apocalypse without a trusty HF transceiver. We’ll still be able to pass messages, keep the world connected long after their smartphones die.
Hamming may seem like a quaint little hobby, but it’s more than that. It’s a brotherhood, bound together by electrons and a love for the airwaves. If you ask me, there’s no finer pleasure than settin’ up a field day operation, sharin’ food, laughter, and stories under the stars with my brethren.
